Buttons are already in us. Buttons can include wounds from past experiences, beliefs and assumptions, fears, shame, unmet needs, unresolved hurts, desires, sinful patterns, and conditioned reactions. It’s important to distinguish our buttons from what are commonly called triggers. A trigger is something that happens in the present that activates a button already within us. When a trigger activates one or more of our buttons, our brain and body may sound an alarm, shifting us into a dysregulated state and preparing us to respond to a perceived threat.
This resource focuses primarily on the button—what is already within us that contributes to our reactions when something happens in the present.
